Summer is Coming. Is Your AC Ready to Handle the Heat?

Your AC may have been running in heating mode over winter, or simply switched off. Don’t assume your cooling will work just because heating did!

Now is the time to check everything is working with a AC summer checklist before the season kicks in, and ensure your AC unit is ready to deliver - when you need it most.

One simple way to start is to follow the 3Cs: Clean, Clear, Check

  1. CLEAN

  • Clean your Filters

This is the easiest and most important step. Dirty filters restrict airflow, making your AC work harder and use more energy. Check filters quarterly and replace them every 1 - 2 years for the best performance.

💡 TIP: If you wash your filter, make sure it’s completely dry before reinstalling. Damp filters can get clogged with dust, which can cause air flow restrictions and mould growth.

For premium indoor air quality, consider v-pleated ducted AC filters like AirClean’s G4 V-Pleat filters, approved by the National Asthma Council.

  • Clean the Indoor Diffusers

Dust and grime can collect on your indoor diffusers, impacting indoor air quality and your health. Wipe them down with a soft cloth or gentle vacuum brush to keep things clean.

💡 TIP: If you notice water marks on the ceiling around the diffuser (for ducted units) or condensation or mould on the diffuser or louvres (all systems), contact your regular servicing agent or local technician as this is a sign of possible internal issues.

  1. CLEAR

  • Clear Around the Outdoor Unit

Make sure there’s space around your outdoor unit. Trim back plants, remove leaves, and clear debris that could restrict airflow or get pulled into the fan - Your outdoor unit needs breathing room!

💡 TIP: If you’ve added a cover to hide the unit, take it off before you use the unit! Decorative covers restrict air flow and put extra strain on the fan motor and

components possibly causing expensive repairs.

  1. CHECK

  • Check Batteries

Check battery-operated sensors, zone controllers, and remote controls for corrosion or low battery power - Small issues here can cause big frustrations later!

  • Check for Smells

Turn your system on and pay attention to any odours. If you notice a smell, contact your regular servicing agent or local technician - musty or burning smells could mean dust build-up, mould, or electrical faults.

  • Check for Unusual Noises

Run the AC for a few minutes and listen carefully. Grinding, squealing, or rattling sounds aren’t normal. Catching these early can help prevent expensive repairs down the track.

  • Check Your Cooling Mode

Don’t assume your cooling will work just because heating did! Switch your system to Cool Mode and make sure it’s blowing cold air.

Also test Dry Mode or Fan Mode - Switching to Dry Mode to circulate air on humid days can save on energy usage and make you feel comfortable.

  • Check Your Last Service Date

If it’s been longer than 12 months, schedule a service with a local technician to check for any potential issues to keep your AC running smoothly.

Conclusion - Be Prepared With our AC Summer Checklist

A little preparation now can make all the difference when the summer heat hits. Following the 3Cs helps your AC run efficiently, stay reliable, and avoid those last-minute breakdowns that always seem to strike on the hottest days.

If you spot any issues, don’t wait - call your qualified technician.
